Front-month crude oil futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex) traded in 2003 at an average $31 per barrel, $4.85 above the previous year, and the highest average price in 20 years -- reflecting a year of geopolitical tensions especially in the Mideast, supply disruptions from producers such as Venezuela, Nigeria and Iraq, increased speculation and lean crude oil stocks in the US.
